Digital Photography Image Files - why we use the RAW image file

RAW v jpg image files

Here at PDMS Photography, all of our digital photographic work is recorded as an uncompressed RAW image file which have distinct advantages to that of using jpg image files. The RAW file format can be compared to that of a film negative and does require a certain amount of post camera processing, adjustments necessary to the whole or part of the image such as colour correction, exposure modification or selective correction to a specific area before it is fit and ready to use. Images recorded in jpg format are naturally compressed in camera and therefore are unable to retain very fine and subtle detail. Additionally, each time a jpg file is saved it is compressed even further, reducing both quality and definition of the image.

As RAW image files are uncompressed they are therefore, a much larger file size to that of the jpg output from the camera.

In order to use the RAW image, special software applications are required to open the files and adjust the image. Most of the popular semi and professional camera manufacturers generally supply some form of basic software to enable a RAW image to be viewed and moderately adjusted. More advanced software applications such as Adobe Lightroom, offers a greater range of adjustments and refinements to be carried out with the option of individual or batch processing to hand. Once these corrections are made, the RAW image files are exported in a usable file format, normally jpg. Adobe Lightroom also allows you select the pixel ratio, dpi and quality of the exported files. Additionally, for those larger assignments, you also have the option to produce contact sheets small enough to attach to an email for your client to initially view and select the images required. There is also the option to batch watermark every image to protect your work from copyright infringements. Another advantage of using the RAW image file is that if any future adjustments are necessary, lets say to crop the image to a different print ratio, the RAW image is opened to make the adjustment then re-exported as a first generation jpg image, maintaining the same high quality and definition as before.

The importance of correct Monitor and Printer Calibration.

When making any adjustments to photographs, i.e. exposure (density) or colour balance before printing them, it is imperative that all of the equipment used in each of the processes, such as monitors, scanners and printers are calibrated correctly to the industry standard in order to maintain consistency throughout and that the final results are accurately reproduced. PDMS Photography regularly re-calibrates all equipment as standard practice to ensure that what you see, is actually, what you get.
